Fire Prevention & Inspections

Plans Review:
Receives construction plans from Chief Building Inspector; reviews and approves for fire related requirements. Issues permits.
Fire Safety Inspections:
Supervises and conducts inspection programs for all commercial, multi-family residential, health-care, church and school occupancies as mandated by code; performs inspections independently and jointly with Police Department Crime Prevention Unit.
Acceptance Inspections:
Performs acceptance tests all required sprinkler, fire suppression, detection and fire alarm systems; issues approval certificates when complete.
Task Force Inspections:
Works with Building Inspection Department reviewing and inspecting targeted properties for zoning, hazard and property maintenance deficiencies.
Code Adoption:
Works with Fire Chief, Building Inspection Department and Codes Review Board planning, reviewing, amending and adopting Building and Fire Prevention Codes.
Record Keeping:
Maintains records of all prevention and education activities; prepares and submits monthly and annual Fire Prevention reports; prepares and distributes inspection reports; prepares statistical analyses of effects of prevention programs.
Citations:
In addition to the Fire Chief, the Fire Prevention Platoon Chief and all firefighters assigned to the Fire Prevention Platoon shall be authorized to issue citations for violations of ordinances or statutes applicable to fire prevention, building safety and associated fire department operations, activities and situations.
Alarm Receiving Network:
Recommends system and hardware; prepares specifications; programs alarm receiver; trouble shoots alarm system problems; supervises maintenance and repairs; establishes liaison between alarm accounts and alarm receipt center; prepares and sends annual monitoring bills; evaluates and recommends new technologies; maintains records of alarm system installation and acceptance testing.
CAD System:
Maintains up to date data base for CAD program; coordinates interface between CAD system, alarm receiving system and data system with communications officer; coordinates modifications to CAD system with consultant.
